September 2924 Training Update

Feedback from the 2nd group of attendees of the online oncology social work workshop held  July and Aug 2024 .

These are just a few of the comment I received after the 2nd training program in July Aug this year. I was such a pleasure teach a group of really interested colleagues about oncology social work. The sessions were interactive and sharing. It was the highlight of my year. Thank you to all for the support of this project. This work is allowing me to pass on the baton to a new generation of oncology social workers thus ensuring the growth of the profession in South Africa. It has allowed me to fulfil a dream, and I am privilege to have the opportunity to have a meaning making experience like this in my live time. Thank you to all for the support!!

I’m writing this email to share a moment of gratitude for the zoom coaching session. I want to express my deepest gratitude for your dedication to the mental health of those in our community. Your commitment to hosting once-a-day classes via Zoom  has been a source of comfort and guidance for me. Thank you for providing a clear  understanding of how cancer affects patients and their families  and how we can provide psychosocial support for cancer patients and their families. Your effort and empathy have not gone unnoticed, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your compassion and kindness.

I personally believe that it is such a privilege but also a huge responsibility to work with people diagnosed with cancer and walk the journey with them. We work on “Holy Ground “ because we work  with people in one of the most vulnerable and life changing times of their life.

Although I am working in the oncology field for more than 12 years, I sometimes get stuck in my old ways of doing things and sometime even get bored with myself. Working as the only social worker in two busy practices with the patient load that increases every day, I sometimes just have time to focus on the tasks like referrals, discharge planning and other administrative task and not enough on counselling.

This course helped me to dust off some of the old therapeutic tools but also learn new ones that I can implement in practice. I am a very practical person and have most of the time the best results with visual activities. I plan to use the suitcase of life approach in groupwork sessions but adapt it to work in the oncology setting. It can also form part of the meaning making process for patient and families. The photovoice really touched my heart in a short and simple way-thanks for it!! I plan to use some of the principals together with photo and self-portrait box therapy. I used it years ago and it is so powerful!

It was also good to read more articles and research papers in the oncology social work field. Information in our field and specific in a South African context is hard to find.

The practical examples of patients that come with years of experience but also your own journey was very insightful and help a lot to understand concepts better.

Thank you so much for the privilege to attend the course and learn so much. Thank you for the resources that is available that we can go back and read again and again!!
